- After her father’s death when she was 13, Lata took to singing and acting to support her family, making her debut in 1942 with a song for a Marathi film.
Rise to Stardom
- Lata moved to Mumbai in 1945 where music director Ghulam Haider became her mentor. Her big break came with the song “Aayega Aanewala” from the film Mahal (1949).
- By the 1950s, her clear, emotive voice became synonymous with the leading heroines of Hindi cinema, cementing her as the top playback singer.
